xAI, an AI start-up founded by Elon Musk, has unveiled the latest version of their AI chatbot designated Grok 1.5. The announcement comes just 2 weeks after the company released Grok 1.0.
On March 28, 2024, the company stated in a blog post, “Introducing Grok-1.5, our latest model capable of long context understanding and advanced reasoning. Grok-1.5 comes with improved reasoning capabilities and a context length of 128,000 tokens.”. Musk also posted on X (formerly Twitter) that his company is training Grok 2.0 and claimed that this version will “exceed current AI on all metrics”.
On its website, xAI showcased how Grok 1.5 outperformed its previous version on several metrics. The improvements were most noticeable in coding and math-related tasks. Additionally, Grok 1.5 can process up to 128K tokens worth of context, which is significantly higher than version 1.0.

Grok 1.5 Performance
Notably, Grok 1.5 performed less remarkably compared to other popular AI models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini. While the initial improvements are promising, Grok still has some ways to go before rivaling the biggest chatbots in the industry.
Musk and his company announced that they would make their AI model open source to encourage developers to enhance Grok’s capabilities. Grok 1.5 is also expected to be open-source, though the model is currently only “available to early testers and existing Grok users on the 𝕏 platform”.
