Meta Inc., the parent company of Facebook and WhatsApp, has recently unveiled a new virtual AI assistant. Aptly titled Meta AI, the company claims its model is the “most intelligent AI assistant you can use for free”.
“Built with Meta Llama 3, Meta AI is one of the world’s leading AI assistants, already on your phone, in your pocket for free”, the company stated in a blog post. The company has currently rolled out Meta AI in 13 countries outside of the USA including Australia, South Africa, Uganda, and more.
Meta AI is built using the Llama 3, which is the latest iteration of the company’s flagship large language model (LLM). Earlier this week, Meta also claimed that the Llama 3 model is on par with other proprietary LLMs such as Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s GPT. These announcements are in line with the company’s effort to catch up to its competitors, most of whom have made significant strides in the generative AI race.

Meta AI is already available on Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. Additionally, Meta AI is accessible on computers via meta.ai (the website). Users can also utilize the assistant in their Facebook feed.
One of the highlighted features of Meta AI is its “Imagine Feature”, a real-time image generator. This feature will automatically create images as soon as a user starts typing. And it will change the image after every few letters. It can also create animations from any given picture. This feature is currently available in its beta version and only on WhatsApp and the Meta AI website in the US.
