Google has updated its advertising policy for cryptocurrency-related content, permitting the promotion of blockchain video games featuring NFTs. However, the tech giant has imposed restrictions on gambling-related crypto games and those offering token-staking rewards.
This update signifies Google’s effort to establish a regulated yet open approach to blockchain and NFT games.
Under the revised rules, advertisers can create Google ads for games offering in-game items like cosmetics, weapons, or other assets as NFTs. Yet, it explicitly prohibits advertising for crypto or NFT games where players can wager or stake NFTs for real-world value rewards, including more NFTs. Games deemed “social casino games” granting users NFTs are also barred from advertising.
Moreover, games allowing users to lock up their crypto or NFTs to earn more crypto over time are not permitted. According to Google’s criteria, any content that features elements of gambling will face additional restrictions. It requires gambling licenses or certification through Google’s gambling application.
This update underscores Google’s distinction between NFTs enhancing gameplay and those enabling gambling mechanics. It aligns with its earlier policy for Android developers incorporating NFTs in games and emphasizes the importance of transparency regarding tokenized digital assets.
