Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has recently unveiled its next generation of large language models (LLM) called Llama 3. Meta claims that Llama 3 is the “most capable openly available LLM to date” as the company raises its efforts to catch up to competitors.
“Today, we’re excited to share the first two models of the next generation of Llama, Meta Llama 3, available for broad use”, the company states in a blog post. The two models come with 8B and 70B parameters. The blog also provides a chart showcasing Llama 3’s improved performance compared to its previous iterations as well as other chat bots such as Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude AI.

It is important to note that unlike Gemini or Chat GPT, all of the Llama models are open source. The company states that this is deliberate as it hopes to create “the best open models that are on par with the best proprietary models available today”. This could potentially aid Meta’s AI models to gain an advantage over its competition.
“Our goal in the near future is to make Llama 3 multilingual and multimodal, have longer context, and continue to improve overall performance across core LLM capabilities such as reasoning and coding”, the company added.
People can already test out the capabilities of Llama 3 by using Meta AI, a custom virtual AI assistant. Meta AI was built with the Llama 3 technology and it is already available on FaceBook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and the web.
