American tech giant Microsoft has recently announced a historic deal between the company and the Australian government. Microsoft is reportedly investing AUD 5 billion to boost the country’s computer industry and help it stake a claim in the current artificial intelligence boom.
According to a press release on the company’s website, the deal will be fulfilled over the next two years. Among its many sub-goals, the company will create a Microsoft Data Center Academy and Microsoft-Australian Signals Directorate Cyber Shield (MACS) in Australia.
“This is our largest investment in Microsoft’s 40-year history in Australia and a testament to our commitment to the country’s growth and prosperity in the AI era.”, said Brad Smith, President and Vice Chairman of Microsoft.
The deal also puts special emphasis on cybersecurity as Australia prepares to protect its citizens from the increasing risk of cyberattacks.
Speaking on the impact of this investment on the country’s economy, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had this to say – “This is a major investment in the skills and workers of the future, which will help Australia to strengthen our position as a world-leading economy.”.
This announcement coincides with the Australian Prime Minister’s state visit to the United States.
