OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, has recently unveiled the newest iteration of its flagship AI model called GPT-4o (the “o” stands for “Omni”). This development comes at a time when the race for generative AI is heating up among competitors.
“Today we are introducing our newest model, GPT-4o, and will be rolling out more intelligence and advanced tools to ChatGPT for free”, states OpenAI in a blog post. The company claims GPT-4o is better than most AI models at understanding image prompts.
According to the official statement, this new model is capable of more “natural human-computer interaction”. It can generate responses to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds with an average time of 320 milliseconds. It can also process any combination of text, audio, and video, and generate appropriate content.

As part of Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI, GPT-4o will be available on Microsoft’s “Azure OpenAI Service”. The initial release is limited to just 2 regions in the US, with further rollouts planned for the future. “Microsoft is thrilled to announce the launch of GPT-4o, OpenAI’s new flagship model on Azure AI”, said Microsoft in a press release.
GPT-4o is currently available to ChatGPT Plus and Team users. Enterprise users can expect to use this model sometime in the future. ChatGPT Free users can also try out the new model with a greater message limit than plus plan users.
