The United Nations has raised concerns about using AI-generated deep fakes to propagate hate and misinformation on social media. In a recent report, “Information Integrity on Digital Platforms,” the global organization emphasized the importance of responsible AI utilization.
“These risks have further intensified because of rapid advancements in technology, such as generative artificial intelligence.” The UN report said.
The report highlights that a child joins the online world every half second, rendering them susceptible to risks. Additionally, 58.5% of survey respondents expressed concerns about encountering misinformation online.
The report suggests improving platform transparency and implementing the Code of Practice on Disinformation to strengthen information integrity. It highlights the diverse responses of digital platforms in tackling the need for better content removal policies and practices. The report calls for increased data access for researchers, user empowerment through digital literacy, and exploring disincentives for spreading misinformation.

The UN’s Next Step
The United Nations Secretariat will engage with various stakeholders to develop the United Nations Code of Conduct. The Secretariat may conduct in-depth studies to enhance global understanding of information integrity, particularly in under-researched regions. The Secretary-General will establish dedicated capacity within the Secretariat to effectively address online mis- and disinformation and hate speech that impacts United Nations mandates and priorities.
Addressing mis- and disinformation and hate speech is crucial for achieving sustainable development goals. The report emphasizes the need for strong global cooperation and outlines core principles that should guide a United Nations Code of Conduct for Information Integrity on Digital Platforms.
