American actor and comedian Bill Murray got his Ethereum wallet hacked this Thursday. Reportedly, 110 (~US$174,000) Wrapped Ethereum was stolen, funds raised in a recent NFT charity auction.
- On-chain data shows the hacker started to remove the funds with two unauthorized transactions around 7:00 p.m. ET on Thursday. Additionally, the delinquent was able to extract 108.03 WETH, following this, a second transaction was made, allowing the hacker to remove 1.73 WETH more. The hacker was able to steal 174,250 worth of WETH in total at the time.
- Murray’s wallet security team claimed to have protected the wallet by moving 800 Ethereum NFTs of the Bill Murray 1,000 project to more secure wallets in a few hours as a result of the incident.
- The Bill Murray NFT auction was intended to raise funds to support a 3-years old, with a rare condition. Although the ETH was successfully withdrawn by the hacker, a good Samaritan and Coinbase user sent 120 ETH to Chive Charities to compensate for Bill Murray’s stolen Ethereum.
- Gavin Gillas, one of the executives of The Chive and Murray’s associate claims to know why it happened. He alleges that the hacker stole Bill Murray’s Ethereum by placing malicious codes on a work computer.
- Murray’s team is working with the crypto analytics firm Chainalysis to trace and recover the funds.
