Verona Debuts verUSD Stablecoin with $100M in Institutional Commitments

Verona Launches verUSD Stablecoin for AI Agent Payments
  • verUSD Stablecoin brings more than $100 million in commitments for AI agent payment infrastructure.
  • AI agents could transform online payments by autonomously comparing services, selecting providers, and completing increasingly frequent transactions.

Verona, formerly XION, has launched verUSD, a dollar-backed stablecoin designed for AI agents to pay for verified data and settle transactions, a report reveals. The launch comes with more than $100 million in commitments, including over $60 million in contracted payment volume and funding from ecosystem partners.

The coin is initially available across Ethereum, Polygon, Avalanche, Optimism, Arbitrum, Celo, and Solana, with Brale expected to handle its issuance.

According to Verona, its infrastructure has already processed more than 70 million verified interactions from 5 million users.

Antony Anzalone of Burnt Labs said,

“The products are built to be invisible, and nobody is being asked to hold verUSD.”

Animoca Ventures’ James Ho described verUSD as a fully reserved dollar coin tied to usage rather than speculation.

However, verUSD enters a competitive market alongside USDC, USDT, and other stablecoins while details about reserves, redemptions, and regulatory compliance remain limited.

How AI Agents Could Change Online Payments

AI agents could shift online payments from human-led purchases to automated transactions between software systems. AI agents may compare fees, choose providers, make payments, and manage transactions without requiring a person to approve each transaction.

According to the IMF’s Dan Katz, AI agents could continuously assess fees, services, exchange rates, and execution quality, possibly reducing switching costs and increasing competition.

Visa also found that AI agents are already being used to book travel, reorder inventory, query data providers, and buy computing resources. As these transactions become smaller and more frequent, low-cost payment rails could make machine-to-machine payments more practical.
